My mother signed me up for music lessons, and the first thing we learned was how to breathe properly. The instructor taught us to drop the diaphragm as we inhaled, and squeeze the navel in and up on the exhale. There were lots of silly exercises, like blowing up a balloon without puffing the cheeks.

I always left the class feeling calm. Now, I know why. Thanks for a great article, Markham.
